| Respite Care
provides a much needed break from
child care responsibilities for
parents who are under stress and
cannot afford childcare. Trained
childcare providers and volunteers
care for children under six years of
age and assist parents with literacy
activities and parenting skills.
Centers are located in Central
Honolulu and Kalihi. |
| Time-Out for Parents of Children 0-5 years. Respite is a safe and nurturing environment where families can drop off their children for three hours of free childcare so that they can have some time for themselves. It is also a way to meet other parents, have fun, and share ideas and experiences. Both mothers and fathers are encouraged to participate |
What happens at Respite?
Experienced staff and volunteers give children loving attention and stimulation, engaging them in activities that help them grow and develop.
Respite caregivers meet with families to help them set goals for themselves and their children, and to discuss ways to meet their goals. Parents join caregivers in observing their child’s development, and understanding how they can support their child’s growth. Respite also provides information about community resources, and links families to needed services.
Who is the Caregiver?
Respite caregivers have experience working with children and have been trained to provide quality childcare, infant care, child development, and play activities that promote growth and learning.
Group Activities
Group activities are also available at each Respite location for parents who want to attend outings with other parents, to “talk story,” participate in parenting activities, and in craft workshops.

Who can have Respite?
Families with children from six weeks to five years of age who are undergoing stressful situations can use the Respite Care Program.
Respite is free of charge.
Families can have three (3) hours of Respite one day per week. Families keep the same day each week.
